We are a Community School united in our relentless commitment to academic and personal growth for every student.

          A Message From Mr. Platt

Tiger families,

March just flew by and it was certainly filled with plenty to celebrate. Tumalo students read over 84,000 minutes during the Read A Thon, earning over $12,000 and earning Mr. Platt a fancy new hairdo! Many of our after-school clubs are up and running, culminating in an amazing performance by our 2nd/3rd grade performing arts club! In addition, we had a very successful conference time with families, sold lots of books at the Book Fair, and crowned one of our 4th-grade teams Battle of The Books Champion!

April marks the official beginning of our big state testing push. Our 3rd-5th grade classes will begin testing on April 8th. We have intentionally built our testing calendar to allow students some breathing room and respite from the intellectual toll of these tests. That being said, it is critical that your student receive adequate sleep, nutritious meals, and most importantly a consistent routine of attendance.

Our PTC is working overtime right now as they prepare for our Annual Boots and Bling Auction on May 18th. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and a really fun time! Look for tickets to go on sale in the coming weeks. I hope that you will consider joining us!  Let’s push hard through April, our kiddos deserve it!

Take care,

Mr. Platt

                   News From Mrs. Hoyt

Happy April Tumalo Families!

This year is cruising right along. I hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for the big push to the end of the year. With only 1 holiday, or day off, between now and Summer break - this is a time when there is a lot of learning happening and also a lot of fun. Many students make their biggest academic gains during this stretch of the year.  Please do your best to have your students attend regularly.

PERSONAL SAFETY CURRICULUM

This is a reminder that we will be starting our personal safety unit starting MONDAY APRIL 8.  I will be using the Second Step Child Protection Unit.  An informational notice has been sent out to all parents via parentsquare. Please take the time to read it. If you have any questions or would like to opt your child out for any reason - please call or email me directly Thank you!  Meredith.hoyt@redmondschools.org, or 541-382-2853.

“Child sexual abuse happens—more than you think. But, research shows there’s something simple and powerful you can do right now that goes a long way to protect your child: talk with them.  Informed children are less likely to be abused, and those who feel comfortable talking openly with a caring adult are more likely to disclose abuse if it happens.  Anytime is the right time to talk with your child, and you can start today.”

For more information about abuse prevention please visit: https://www.cfchildren.org/resources/child-abuse-prevention/

April Character Trait of the Month

We are excited to focus on Courage this month! One way to think about Courage is “choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary.”

We have all demonstrated Courage in our lives. Many of us have seen people practice Courage in ways that have inspired us. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Find time this week to share a story about Courage with your student (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Courage this week. Think, and discuss with your student things you both would like to do, but find intimidating or scary. ….Maybe it’s a new hobby, trying a new game, sharing your art or invention with others, or going on an adventure somewhere.

Story Prompts:

● A time I (or someone else) showed Courage was _____.

● An act of Courage that changed/challenged me was ___

Best,

Meredith Hoyt

 A Note From Nurse Megan

Happy April Tumalo Families!

Spring on the High Desert is here, and it seems that it is coming in spurts… will it be warm? Will it snow? Spring definitely likes to keep us guessing.

With the transition of seasons, I like to remind families of the importance of layers, extra clothing, hydration, nutrition, and sun protection.

Layers and extra clothing- We all know that here in Central Oregon, it may give us a dusting of snow in the morning and be warm and sunny by the afternoon. Sending appropriate layers with your child/ren can help keep them comfortable during the school day. And as another reminder- I know I sound like a broken record- throwing a change of clothes in your child’s backpack is always a good idea! This can save you from having to make an unexpected trip to the school, whether it’s a bathroom accident, bloody nose, or the fact that your child went puddle jumping at recess!

Water- I see so many students with complaints of headaches as we transition into warmer weather. The culprit is often mild dehydration. Please double check with your student/s before they head off to school to be sure they have a water bottle with them. It never hurts to check in the evening to be sure they are drinking enough water during the day. Please also avoid sending sugary drinks, such as soda or energy drinks, with your student to school. These are great treats on occasion but discouraged during the school day.

Sun Protection- As the weather warms up, please know that you are welcome to send sunscreen as part of your student/s daily necessities. With younger children please help them apply it in the morning before school, but Oregon does allow students to bring sunscreen to school and use it without a permission form. On days when you know that your student may spend an extended time outside, you can always prepare them with lightweight long sleeved clothing and a sun hat.

Breakfast- This is something I personally struggle with in the morning, but I know that getting out of the house with my son and myself fueled well always makes for a better day. I am sharing one of my favorite breakfast secrets with you. My hope is that it inspires you to spend a little time in the kitchen with your child/ren talking about nutrition and making something healthy and delicious.

Happy Spring!

Nurse Megan

On the Go Breakfast Egg Cups

My favorite thing about this recipe is that you can modify it however you want, and it is a great way to use up leftovers. Sometimes I even use phyllo dough to make it more of a mini quiche. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 10 large eggs

  • ½ teaspoon pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder optional

  • 1 ½ cup diced ham or 8 slices bacon, cooked & crumbled or ½ lb sausage, browned

  • ½ red bell pepper diced

  • 3 tablespoons white onion minced, or 2 green onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or your favorite blend of shredded cheese

  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  2. Combine eggs, salt, & pepper in a medium bowl. Whisk to combine.

  3. Spray a muffin pan very well with cooking spray or grease with butter. Divide the red pepper, onion, ham/bacon/sausage, and cheese over 12 wells.

  4. Pour the egg mixture over the cheese mixture.

  5. Bake for 22-25 minutes or until set.

  6. Remove from cups and serve warm or let cool completely and refrigerate or freeze.

News from The Gym

Hi Tiger families,

With springtime weather here, it’s time to get out and enjoy some sunshine and outdoor activities!  Research has shown that spending time outside together—even just 5 minutes—can yield amazing benefits, such as stress reduction, mood improvement, increased concentration, and a boost in overall well-being.   What are some of your family’s favorite outdoor activities?

We have been working on team-building and problem solving recently in PE.  All grades worked together to cross the “Toxic River”!  Communication, strategizing, and working together were the keys to success!

It’s SKATE TIME!    Next week students will be lacing up their skates in the gym!   All 2nd-5th graders will be learning and practicing inline skating.   If your kids have their own protective gear (elbow/knee/wrist pads), or skates, they are encouraged to bring them.

We are also planning a “Tumalo Skate Night” at The Pavilion in Bend….stay tuned! :)

Congratulations to Mrs. Sterzingers 4th graders for earning the “Golden Shoe Award” and a free PE day last month!   Please encourage your kids to bring their safe shoes on PE days!

Keep movin’!

  Library News

April Showers of snow, rain, or sunshine May bring flowers?

Selecting unique words or using words in a new or different way are some of the techniques that we will explore during the month of April.  In the library, April is National Poetry Month.  As we learn how poetry is another form of storytelling, students will be hearing, reading, and writing poetry.  Stop by the bulletin board later this month to see our POETREE and samples of student work.

April also is National Library Month.  We are discussing the many features of public libraries in our community.   Meeting spaces, access to computers and the internet, play and creative areas, and quiet reading places are all parts of our library system.  Events, displays, and activities take place in our libraries that are open to everyone.  Borrowing is not just limited to books. Our students have created lists of things that can be borrowed from the library like movies, music, instruments, activity kits, games, and puzzles.  Explore your public library with your student and discover what treasures await to be sampled and shared.  We look forward to the opening of the new Redmond library in the fall.

Spring break was busy for many families and if your student has missing library books, maybe the hunt for those did not take place. No worries! We have lots of time to enjoy books and find those copies that are hiding in the couch, behind the bed, in the car under the seat, or sitting in plain sight, avoiding the backpack.  As of today, we have 179 books overdue! That seems like a lot, and it is, but with your help, I am confident that most will be returned.  If a book is lost, damaged, or just cannot be returned, there are a number of ways to clear the student account.  Please contact Mrs. Hitchcock for ideas that will work for your family.  Records of missing library books do follow students as they move on to new schools, creating a fine that may be a surprise when it is time to graduate.  If you are curious about if your student has a late book, please reach out to ask.  Each week at library time students are notified about missing books.

TUMALO PTC NEWS

Please join us for our next PTC Meeting on Wednesday, April 10th @ 4:30 in the library at Tumalo School.

All are welcome!!

Read A Thon
We are trying to finish up our Read a Thon and would love to have all donations in by the end of next week, April 15th. Remember, each grade will have 2 winners; the student that read the most, and the student that collected the most donations. We also have a classroom party to award to the class that turns in their donations first.

If you need to know what is outstanding for your student just call the office and we can let you know.

Thanks again for your support.

   Auction Classroom Baskets
We are starting to collect donations for our auction baskets (items or cash). Each grade has a basket theme:
Kindergarten: Gardening                                                                       1st: Arts and Crafts                                  2nd: Summer Fun
3rd: Survival
4th: Cooking
5th: Family Fun Night
Please start shopping for fun items to help fill up your student's grade level "basket" (wheelbarrow).
We are also working on grade level projects that will be auctioned off at the live auction. We are asking each family to donate $5 per class to help offset the cost of the projects. Please send cash as we have no way to cash checks for purchasing our supplies.
BONUS**
We are going to have a U of O Duck and OSU Beaver basket to raffle off as well. Please look for your favorite Duck or Beaver goodies to add to the basket. We have done this in the past and we have been able to gather some really fun, unique items. Support your team and share the Duck and Beaver spirit!

Donuts with Grownups

A huge thank you to Jason Adams with Amnis Opes Institue for hosting our last Donuts with Grownups get-together.  Thank you, Jason!  We appreciate your generosity!!

We look forward to seeing you all next Wednesday at our next Donuts with Grownups!

  • Lost and Found is overflowing, please stop by and check it while you are in the building. Also, please remember to write your students' names on all their personal items such as lunchboxes,  jackets, sweatshirts, hats...etc. It helps us get their item back to them once it's found.
