 A NOTE FROM MR. PLATT

Hello Tiger families!

The year is off to a great start!  Thank you all for your continued support and engagement. It was wonderful seeing so many families at our Back to School Night! We have a very full month ahead of us. Between classes, going on their first field trips, Jog-a-thon, assemblies, and events, it seems we have something fun and exciting each and every week!

Music starts in October! With your support through PTC funding (Jog-a-thon, Read-a-thon, Auction), we can continue our music program here at Tumalo school.  This is part of what makes Tumalo so unique! No other school in our district has a weekly music program the way we do. This year, I am excited to announce that Mrs. Alisa Allen will be our music teacher. While she may be new to our position, she is not new to our school. Mrs. Allen is a former Tumalo parent and long time music educator! I am so excited to welcome her to our team!

Parents, I have some homework for you…

Attendance- Our students are doing great, but every day matters! Students with less than 90% attendance will begin receiving letters and phone calls. Please continue to make this a priority with your student.

Jog-A-Thon- This is one of three major fundraisers for our PTC, which allows them to do the incredible work they do! The parents who head up our PTC invest hundreds of hours to support all kids at Tumalo!  Help us by doing your part to get the word out for our Jog-A-Thon. Donation forms will go home with your child soon. Post to Facebook or Instagram…ask neighbors and family. Every dollar adds up. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Alfalfa Community Night 10/9/25 - Alfalfa Families, check your kiddo's backpacks for the invitation to Alfalfa Community Night at the Alfalfa Grange. We’ll have a family-style spaghetti dinner.

I hope to see many of you at the October PTC meeting on October 8th!

Yours in service,

Mr. Platt

Nurse Megan News

Hello Tumalo Families,

Happy Autumn, Tumalo Tigers!  I hope you are all enjoying the change to the season. As always, now that we are all back together, we are seeing an uptick in respiratory illnesses. Please remind your children that one of the best ways to prevent spreading illness is by using good hand hygiene. This is an easy task that can be practiced at home as well as at school. The district recently shared flyers on when to keep your child home if they are sick. A few important things to note are that students who have had a fever can return to school when they have been fever- free for 24 hrs without fever reducing medication, and students who have vomited or had diarrhea must stay home from school for a full 24 hours once symptoms have resolved.

Medications at School

This is an important reminder not to send medications to school with your student/s without prior notification. If medication, whether over the counter or prescription, is needed during the school day, a parent or guardian must fill out the district medication form and provide the school with the medication in its original container.  This rule applies to cough drops as well! Prescription meds need the pharmacy label with the dosage and physician order.  We cannot accept meds in baggies. If a child needs to carry their medication with them, such as an inhaler, another self medication agreement needs to be filled out as well.

*Supplements that are not FDA approved, such as vitamins and essential oils, are not allowed to be administered at the school, and should not be sent with your student/s. Please give these at home. We also cannot accept medication that contains aspirin or subsalicylate (an ingredient in Pepto Bismol).

I also feel it is very relevant to ask that you please take a few minutes to talk to your child/ren about not taking medicine unless it is given to them by a trusted adult or medical provider. Using someone else’s medication, such as using someone else's inhaler, can have very harmful side effects.

If you have any questions about sending medicine to school, please reach out to me. If it is necessary for your child/ren to receive meds during the day, I am here to assist and answer any questions.

Spare Clothing

Fall and winter bring unpredictable weather.  Even as we enjoy this beautiful fall weather, I know soon I will see more and more students coming to me cold because they accidentally got wet while out on the playground. I feel it is always a good idea to send an extra change of clothes along with your student in their backpack, even your 4th and 5th graders! This can be a great way to avoid an unexpected trip to the school. This also comes in handy if your student has a bloody nose or bathroom accident. I have a few things on hand, but in many cases, I do not have the right size for a student in need of a change of clothes, so having something already with them gets them back to class much faster.

Immunizations

I would also like to take the opportunity for my annual reminder to be sure your child’s immunizations are up-to-date. Please view the attached flyer for Oregon’s immunization requirements. The exclusion date for students who do not have their immunizations is in February, but I am always so surprised at how quickly it arrives! I am always happy to answer questions about Oregon requirements, help you with tracking down records, or assist you with what is needed to complete a non-medical exemption.

Be well and enjoy this gorgeous autumn season,

Nurse Megan

                                     LIBRARY NEWS

Hello Tumalo Families!

We are already in the rhythm of the new school year!  Our routines are “falling” into place as we enter the FALL season of cooler days, changing leaves, and bountiful harvests.  Let’s “fall in love with reading” just for fun! Take 20 minutes a day, with a book or two, and away from other activities to feel recharged and ready for your next adventure.

As promised, OBOB is upon us!  Sign-ups will begin on Oct 3rd at library time.

We will announce teams the week of Oct. 13-17. Tumalo students are talented!  They enjoy the competition, talking about the books, practicing new skills, and working within a team. Come see for yourself.

Your student will bring home a permission form requesting your attention.  The books that are selected by a volunteer committee are generally 4th to 5th-grade reading and content level.  If there is a title that you do not want your student to read for OBOB, please leave that box unchecked.  Some selections may contain themes that your student is not ready to explore.

Family members who want to know more about OBOB, help your student, or support the Tumalo program are encouraged to read up on the website.

https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/ .  Volunteers make all the difference for our students.  Please contact Mrs. Hitchcock to learn more about how to get plugged in.

Mark your calendars for the Fall Book Fair, which will be held during conference week, November 17-20.  This is a great time to purchase affordable books for your home library or gift items for the winter holidays.  Visit the fair with your student and discover what books are of interest.

One last housekeeping item, overdue notices.  Each week, an automatic email may appear as a reminder about library books that need to be returned.  Please support your student as they learn to borrow and return materials in a timely fashion.  I do make mistakes, so please let me know if the book has been returned.  During weekly library sessions, students are reminded about any overdue books. The checkout period is 4 weeks, so no worries.

Readers are Leaders!

News From the Gym

Hello Tiger Families!

Happy October!  We are off and running in PE already!

During the past few weeks, we spent time outside learning the “school rules” of many playground games.  Tetherball, Gaga ball, wall ball, hopscotch, kickball, 4 square, Around the World, Bump and switch are in full force during recess now!  It’s been fun watching our Tigers practice their skills and sportsmanship with old and new friends while playing these games during recess and Tiger Time.

Our main goals at Tumalo Physical Education are:

  • Safety :   Please help by reminding your child to wear safe shoes on their PE days !    I have been so impressed with how many students are wearing their safe shoes!    It’s going to be a tight race for the  “Golden Shoe Award”!!

  •   Good Sportsmanship/kindness:    Everyone wins when we are kind to each other!

  •   Healthy lifestyle activities and fitness:   Let’s keep moving!

  • Doing our best to be our best!

This week in PE, all classes have been focusing on cooperation and team building.

Our 2nd-5th graders learned the meaning of teamwork, fitness,  frustration, and fun while completing “Hula Hut Challenges”.

Our K/1 students have been working on their locomotor skills, teamwork, and our underhand slide while playing  4 Corners, “Poison dots”,   sliders, and Take a Chance!

Coming up:    Jog-a-thon!!!   October 22nd!      This is a very fun day and a wonderful fundraiser for our school!    Times:     K/1:    10-10:45               2nd-5th:     11:00-12:00

I will be sending out a volunteer signup next week.   Volunteers will be checking off laps as the students go through your class “gate”.   We are looking for 2 parents per class :)

Work hard, play hard, be kind!

SCHOOL LUNCHES

We are pleased to inform you that Redmond School District will be implementing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) district-wide for the 2025-2026 School Year. District-wide CEP increases school meals’ accessibility, promotes food security by financially supporting families, reduces the stigma associated with school meal benefits, simplifies the payment system, enhances convenience, and increases participation.

What does this mean for you and your child(ren)?

All Redmond School District (and Redmond Proficiency Academy) students will be eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no charge each regular school day of the 2025−2026 school year.   To be reimbursable, these meals must meet certain criteria, including at least 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetables. You may still want to keep a balance on your child(ren)'s school meal account in the event that they would like to purchase extra entrees or individual milk. All students are still welcome to bring food from home.

Note that this will also mean that RSD Nutrition Services will no longer accept or process school meal benefit applications.   Your child(ren) will be able to participate in this no-cost school meal program without having to apply.

If we can answer any questions or be of any further assistance, please contact Redmond School District's Child Nutrition Department at 541-923-8238 or nutrition@redmondschools.org
